With all the hype about an economic recovery in the first few months of 2012 that the Obama administration has been touting, we have suddenly received a reality check with some of the latest economic numbers that have disappointed in the past week or two.
Could this be a precursor to a rerun of 2011 when the winter months of the first quarter appeared to show a turn-around in the economy, only to see a dismal second and third quarter, followed by a promising fourth quarter?
Just this last full week of April 2012, we had an early start to what would mostly be a disappointing week with only one semi-bright spot with new home sales topping estimates of 325,000 by 3,000, coming in at 328,000. However, it was far down from the previous count of 353,000. On Tuesday the economic calendar week began with a dismal Case-Shiller home price index for February of -0.8 — this was a sharp drop hitting the lowest levels in nearly a decade.
When you plug this number into the year-on-year average, home prices have continued to drop another 3.5%. No economy has ever recovered without the help of the increase in home prices. How can home prices increase if we have other economic data, particularly that of Gallup who has determined that home ownership is at the lowest levels that they have ever recorded with only 62% of Americans who say they own a home.
